DOT - ICAO - IATA - IMO Hazardous Materials Labels
The Department of Transportation (DOT), under CFR 49, Part 172.400, requires special labels for packages, overpacks or containers transporting hazardous materials. These hazardous material transportation labels, all available from Unz & Co., also satisfy the compliance regulations of other regulatory agencies, including the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Every Unz & Co. label is manufactured in strict compliance with all applicable government regulations. This attention to detail covers design, color, size and durability. We use fade-resistant inks and a pressure-sensitive backing for easy application. All Unz & Co. hazard class labels meet or exceed US and international transport regulations with regard to quality, design and durability.  This includes conformance with 49 CFR Part 172 Subpart E, IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations Section 7, and the IMDG Code Chapter 5.  These standard 4 in. x 4 in. (100 x 100 mm) square on point (diamond shaped) labels are available in your choice of heavyweight coated paper or vinyl with a pressure sensitive adhesive backing.

Class 1 - Explosives
Explosive labels are available in tabbed designs which allows customer to use them for a variety of different explosive materials.

Hazard Class 1 Explosive Orange Label - Labels for highly hazardous explosives in Divisions 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 require both the division number and compatibility group. Orange tabs provide customers with flexibility to use them for each of these divisions and compatibility groups A through L. (W40-300V)

Hazard Class 1, Division 1.4 Explosive Orange Label - Labels for the less hazardous Divisions 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6 explosives must display only the compatibility letter.  Unz & Co. carries labels for division 1.4 only and these may be customized for compatibility groups B, C, D, E F, G and S as needed.  (W40-310V)

Class 2 - Gases
Gases in Class 2 are divided into three divisions, each with its own unique hazard class label.  

Hazard Class 2 Flammable Gas Red Label  - Flammable gases in Division 2.1, such as hydrogen, acetylene, and propane, require a red label with a flame icon on the top and the number 2 at the bottom.  (W40-425R)

Hazard Class 2 Non-Flammable Gas Green Label -  Non-flammable gases in Division 2.2, such as nitrogen, refrigerants, and other inert gases, require a green label with a cylinder icon on the top and the number 2 at the bottom. (W40-430R)

Hazard Class 2 Toxic Gas White Label - Toxic gases in Division 2.3, such as chlorine, require a white label with a "skull and crossbones" icon on top and the number 2 on the bottom. In the US, these materials are called Inhalation Hazards and the label is slightly modified to contain a black background behind the "skull and crossbones." This modified label is required for toxic gases transported into or within the United States. (W40-433R; W40-434R)

Class 3 - Flammable Liquids

Hazard Class 3 Flammable Liquids Red Label - Flammable liquids in Class 3 include common materials such as fuels, paints, solvents, and alcohols. The flammable liquid label is red with a flame icon at the top and the number 3 at the bottom. (W40-460R)

Class 4 - Flammable Solids
Reactive materials in Class 4 are divided into three divisions, each with its own unique hazard class label.

Hazard Class 4 Flammable Solids Red/White Striped Label - Flammable solids in Division 4.1, such as matches and certain self-reactive substances, require a red and white striped label with a flame icon at the top and the number 4 at the bottom. (W40-455V)

Hazard Class 4 Spontaneously Combustible Solids Red/White Halved Label - Spontaneously combustible materials in Division 4.2, such as certain metal powders, require a 1/2 red and 1/2 white label with a flame icon on the top and the number 4 on the bottom. (W40-510R)

Hazard Class 4 Dangerous When Wet Blue Label
- Materials which will create flammable gases when in contact with water are assigned to Division 4.3. They require a blue label with a flame icon on the top and the number 4 at the bottom. (W40-515R)

Class 5 - Oxidizing Substances and Organic Peroxides
Materials in Class 5 are divided into two divisions, each with its own unique hazard class label.

Hazard Class 5 Oxidizers Yellow Label - Oxidizers in Division 5.1, such as hydrogan peroxide, require a yellow label with flame and "O" symbol at the top and the number 5.1 at the bottom. (W40-405R)

Hazard Class 5 Organic Peroxides Yellow/Red Halved Label - Organic peroxides in Division 5.2, such as benzoyl peroxide and certain additives in epoxy resins, require a 1/2 yellow and 1/2 red label with a flame at the top and the number 5.2 at the bottom. In the US for ground transport, the modified, older label which is completely yellow was able to be used until January 1, 2011. (W40-410R)

Class 6 - Toxic and Infectious Substances
Both toxic and infectious materials comprise this class which is divided into two divisions, each with its own unique hazard class label.


Hazard Class 6 Toxic Substances White Label - Toxic materials in Division 6.1, such as cyanide solutions and pesticides, require a white label with a "skull and crossbones" at the top and the number 6 at the bottom. (W40-423V)

Hazard Class 6 Inhalation Hazard White Label - Certain highly toxic materials in Division 6.1, which are toxic specifically by inhalation, require a modified hazard class label when transported into or within the US by any mode. This label includes a black background behind the "skull and crossbones."  (W40-424R)

Hazard Class 6 Toxic Substances White PGIII Label - Certain materials that have low toxicity, such as tetrachloroethylene, and which have been assigned to Division 6.1 packing group III may display an alternative label that includes the words "PG III." This label is used primarily for air shipments and has replaced the now obsolete "Keep Away From Food" label.  (W40-777R)

Hazard Class 6 Infectious Substances White Label - Division 6.2 includes substances such as virus cultures and potentially infectious blood samples. These materials require a white label with three crescents superimposed on a circle at the top and the number 6 at the bottom. The lower portion of the label must contain information on who to notify in the event of damage or leakage. (W40-600R)

Class 7  - Radioactive
Radioactive materials are divided into three divisions, each with its own unique hazard class label.

Hazard Class 7 Radioactive I White Label -  Low level radioactive materials require a white label with the radioactive trefoil at the top and words including "Radioactive I" on the label. (W40-601R)

Hazard Class 7 Radioactive II White/Yellow Halved Label -  Moderately radioactive materials require a 1/2 white 1/2 yellow label with the radioactive trefoil at the top and words including "Radioactive II" on the label. (W40-602R)

Hazard Class 7 Radioactive III White/Yellow Halved Label -  Highly radioactive materials require a 1/2 white 1/2 yellow label with the radioactive trefoil at the top and words including "Radioactive III" and a Transport Index on the label. (W40-603R)

Class 8 - Corrosives  

Hazard Class 8 Corrosives White Over Black Label - Corrosive materials in Class 8 require a unique hazard class label that is 1/2 white 1/2 black. The upper portion of the label contains a pictogram indicating that these materials are corrosive to both steel and human skin. (W40-485R)

Class 9 - Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods

Hazard Class 9 Miscellaneous Hazardous Black/White Striped Over White Label - Materials which do not meet the specific hazard class definitions of Classes 1 though 8 but which are still regulated by national or international regulations, are included in Class 9. This Miscellaneous Hazard Class includes materials such as dry ice, environmentally hazardous substances, and elevated temperature materials. These materials require a white label with the top 1/2 containing black and white stripes. The bottom of the label displays the number 9. (W40-545R)
